Bridging Communities

Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries

First, five-to-seven registered volunteers are needed on Friday, December 18 (time TBD) to bring gifts from the building’s banquet room (inside), outside to the delivery cars. Social distancing and masks will be required and there will be no exposure to clients. The address is 150 Stinson, Detroit 48201.

Second, those interested in donating to their Christmas Store (list can be found here), please deliver the items to the organization (150 Stimson, Detroit 48201) no later than Friday, December 11.

Focus: HOPE

Volunteers are needed on Saturday, December 19 to deliver meals or load meals into cars (start at 1400 Oakman Blvd., Detroit 48238). Four shifts are available: 8, 9 or 11 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. Please register here

Jimmy’s Kids

Jimmy’s Kids is in need of 50 families to make contactless deliveries to families in need. Please register directly with Howard Lazar at howard@jimmyskids@gmail.com or 248-821-0461.

For those interested in making donations, Jimmy’s Kids is accepting Meijer and Walmart gift cards to distribute. Please write the dollar amount on the gift card or envelope, if it is not already stated. All can be mailed to Howard Lazar at 29546 Briarton, Farmington Hills 48331.

Judson Center

The Judson Center is looking for volunteers to shop for kids or help with gift organization inside the building (4410 West 13 Mile Road, Royal Oak 48073).

  • For those shopping, you will receive a description of what is needed for each child. All items must be dropped off at Judson by next Monday, December 7.
  • Those working inside the building for gift organization and to help with the Wish List room are asked to come between Monday, December 7 and Friday, December 18. Shifts are available from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 12:30 to 4 p.m. Social distancing and safety precautions will be made.

Mariners Inn

Mariners Inn is asking for the donations of medium, large and extra-large men’s hats, gloves and socks, in addition to hard candy and puzzle books. All items must be dropped off to Mariners (445 Ledyard St., Detroit 48201) during the week of December 14, ℅ Tehilah Tolbert.

Meals on Wheels (West Oakland)

Seeking 10 cars/drivers on at 9 a.m. on Christmas Day to pick up prepackaged meals at the Hartland Community Education Building (9525 E. Highland Road, Howell 48843). Delivery routes will be in Western Oakland County (Highland, Milford, Walled Lake, West Bloomfield, Wixom and White Lake).

Michigan Humane Society

If volunteers are comfortable working inside, the Detroit and Rochester Hills shelters are looking for two volunteers each to care for the animals and help with dishes and laundry. Time TBD.

Neighborhood House

Will be distributing 500 gifts to children in the community. Each child will receive two, $25 gifts; a hoodie; pajamas; a book; and winter hat/gloves. In addition, each family will receive a board game and $25 gift card. For those interested in purchasing any items, here is their Holiday Wish List.

Please deliver the gifts no later than next Monday, December 7 to one of the following: Retro Fitness (637 N. Main Street, Rochester), Rochester Hills Public Library (500 Olde Town Road, Rochester – in the lobby) or Neighborhood House (1720 S. Livernois, Rochester Hills). Those shopping via the Wish List on Amazon will be able to send the gift direct to Neighborhood House.

Samaritas Troy

The organization’s Amazon Wish List can be accessed here. All items are organized by list titles on the left and will be delivered directly to Samaritas. Current priorities are space heaters, blankets and hygiene and household cleaning items. Note: similar items may be purchased elsewhere and delivered to theirTroy office (2170 E. Big Beaver Rd. Ste. B, Troy 48083) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Please enter the waiting room and view the instructions on the door that says “Open Door for New Americans Donations.”

In addition, the nonprofit is looking for volunteers to: drop-off donations at client doorsteps; assist with transportation to medical appointments, grocery stores, etc.; move larger items from donor locations to client homes; and virtual tutors. S.O.U.L. (Source of Universal Love)

In need of volunteers to set-up, help at and break-down an outside holiday party on Saturday, December 19. Set-up is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; the event is from 1 to 3 p.m. and clean-up is at 3 p.m. All will take place at 23023 Orchard Lake Road, Building F, Farmington, 48336 and social distancing and mask wearing is required. 

In addition, the organization is asking for donations or volunteers for the following:

  • Gas cards or gift cards to Walmart, Meijer, Kroger and Target
  • Adopt a child or family and provide gifts
  • Food and gift delivery
  • Bake sweet treats (cookies, cakes, pies, etc.)
  • Donations of pet food and pet store gift cards
  • Monetary donations (which can be made at www.sourceofuniversallove.com/donate; on Zelle (Source of Universal Love – SOUL-Farmington); or by check sent to SOUL, P.O. Box 5, Farmington, MI 48332-0005
